Promoting Wellbeing With Accessible Homes

When envisioning the perfect home for their family, Kiley and Jim agreed that accessibility was paramount—access to the outdoors, and access for their daughters, Langley and Boelyn, who have special needs and rely on their wheelchairs to get around. After purchasing a narrow lot in Downers Grove, Illinois, the couple reached out to Chicago-based firm Kuklinski + Rappe Architects to design a residence that would serve their daughters, their son Huck, and their own various needs.

Union Stables Case Study

Built in 1909, the 63,768-square-foot, four-story heavy-timber and masonry building stood silent for decades, tantalizing Ed Weinstein, FAIA, with a wealth of adaptive reuse possibilities to revive this landmark near Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Over the years, the building had served as a parking garage, auto body shop, and furniture warehouse. Today Union Stables shines as a Class A office center and treasured Seattle landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Family friendly home improvements to consider this year

Before it gets too cold, though, theres just enough time to make some changes to your garden add a new set of tables and chairs, do some landscaping or build a Wendy house where your children can play at the weekend.

A window company's clear vision

This Labor Day is all about honoring workers -- but sometimes a job is more than just a job. When there's a shared vision, it can make all the difference. Connor Knighton takes us to a manufacturer in Minnesota to see for himself.

The pieces of pine may not be much to look at. But after they're sliced into different sizes, sorted and stacked, shaped and sanded, they start to transform into something you might look through.

Making Sense of Mid-Century Modern

Want Remodeling Success? Learn and Live These Four Ds

The success of a business depends significantly on how effective the owner is.

Being effective as an owner is a challenge because the owner usually fulfills several other roles, such as being the salesperson or production manager.

What does the business need from the owner, regardless of what else the owner is doing? I believe these four qualities are crucial:

Why does the business exist? Why did the owner start the business? Often, no one who works there knows. The backstory informs the mission and core values of the business.

3 Words That Can Ruin Your Remodeling Business

A remodeling project comes with a lot of costs for a client. The big cost for many clients is simply not being in control.

Think about it:

Your clients live in their homes, knowing where everything is and not having to think much as they go about their daily routine.

How to avoid this occurring with your clients?

Predict the Future

Tell them this is how they will likely feel.

How to Avoid Choosing the Wrong Front Door

Replacing your front entry door should provide good looks and value. An energy-efficient exterior door may trim 10% off your energy bills.

How do you know which door is right for you? Compare the three main materials available for exterior doors:; steel, fiberglass, and wood.

Steel Entry Door

A steel door is great for saving money. A simple unadorned steel door can sell for as little as $150 to $400.

Steel offers the strongest barrier against intruders, but may wear within 5-7 years due to harsh weather like heavy rains or salt air.

Winter Survival Guide for Your House

Between freezing temperatures, snow, ice and wind, winter can be hard on your house. Watch this video for tips on how to:

Easy Fall Prep for a Warm and Cozy Home

  • Install and Maintain Paths and Walkways

Make sure you check sidwalks and driveways for cracks. If you don't fill them now, water can seep in and freeze, making them even larger. Take the time to resurface worn concrete now and save you a whole lot of time and money later.

10 Fall Home Maintenance Musts

  • Check for Peeling Paint

Inspect exterior walls to see if any paint is peeling or blistering on the house or outbuildings. According to Carl Minchew, Director of Benjamin Moore Paints, "Peeling paint is a sign that the existing paint film is failing and can no longer protect the side of the building. Left uncorrected, the siding itself will deteriorate, leading to expensive repairs in the future."

5 Tips to Cut Your Electricity Bill

Cutting back on your energy usage is one of the best ways to bring down your electricity bill. Making changes to not only your wattage consumption, but also the way your home retains and expels air can have a dramatic effect on the way your space uses electricity. Here are 5 tips on how to lower your electricity bill.

Tip 1 - Focus on Small Steps

How to Choose an Energy-Efficient Door

Most homeowners don’t think of their front door when determining how to save energy in their home. But as with windows, exterior doors lower the insulating value of the surrounding wall. A poorly installed door, or one that does not have sufficient weather stripping, leads to drafts and air leaks that waste energy. If a new front door is in your remodeling plans, consider an energy-efficient model.

5 Vital Guidelines for Home Energy Optimization

As we all know energy inefficiency is a huge problem for most homes. Home improvement and performance are never-ending drills. Initiating the process of home energy can be quite overwhelming. Here's a beginner’s list to get you going on the right track. Rated from 1 to 5 by level of difficulty to repair by: doing it yourself, cost, time invested and probable positive impact.

Inside out, Outside In

Marvin Windows and Doors Reveals Architects Challenge Clash

The 2016 Marvin Architects Challenge has began another segment of the yearly contest called the Architects Challenge Showdown. In May, there were six architect-designed projects proclaimed as winners in their architectural sector as elected by a panel of professionals. With Marvin giving the general audience a chance to pick the showdown victor.

Eden Praire’s home “Tramonto” is a Marvin Showdown Finalist

Minneapolis-based Murphy & Co sketched out the impressive house. The “Tramonto” house is on a lengthy elevated estate featuring its own one of a kind ski slope in the south outskirts Bellerieve reinforcement. This home was built in 2013 originally and then rendered to John Kraemer & Sons in 2014 by an Edina-based contractor.  The spectacular home includes a connection to the riverbank with its 4.2-acre of territory currently priced around 3.3 million from the Hennepin County proprietorship tax transcripts.

New Hampshire Home Edgewater II

In New Hampshire a town by the name of Harrisville Dan Scully from Daniel V. Architects firm remodeled a home known as Edgewater. Dan Scully was one of the victors of the Marvin Architect’s Challenge a client from Millwork Master. Edgewater before the transformation had a bellicosely giant and piercing canopy toward the water. It had all sliders, with a dome filled of cut glass with no improvement, and clapboards with cramped cruel fit.

A Toast to Big Doors:

There are many craft beer companies with cool breweries, restaurants, and taprooms, but Surly Brewing Co. of Minneapolis, Minnesota has distinguished itself from the crowd.

In December 2014, the 10-year-old brewer opened its gates to the upper Midwest’s first destination brewery. Set in the Prospect Park neighborhood of Minneapolis, an area defined by train yards and towering grain silos, the 8.3-acre campus has created new life in the Twin Cities.

Oversized Windows and Glass Doors Improve Energy Efficiency

Questions over expansive glass used to offer homeowners a tradeoff: accept poorer home energy performance and higher utility bills, or revamp the exterior wall to compensate for glass thermal loss.

Now, modern home design innovations are proving bigger glass to be better. A new generation of oversized wood-framed multi-panel sliding doors, casement windows and awning windows defy the need to compromise.
